00:01:40.833 >> I WOULD LOVE TO SEE, AS THEY

00:01:43.969 COLLEGE, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE
00:01:44.837 THEM COME BACK AND BE STUDENTS
00:01:46.472 HERE.
00:00:00.030 I received a grant during my
00:00:01.380 undergraduate studies at Hobart William
00:00:03.750 Smith Colleges to start a nonprofit
00:00:05.970 organization so it started off with the
00:00:08.099 mission trip to do oral education
00:00:10.260 outreach in the Dominican Republic and
00:00:13.049 then I started a dental school and I
00:00:14.849 wanted to really get involved and I
00:00:16.500 found that cure was the perfect
00:00:17.670 opportunity for me to give back to the
00:00:19.380 community and really make an impact on
00:00:21.449 these children's lives we have now these
00:00:23.310 children from the Cure program who never
00:00:26.580 even thought about a career in dentistry
00:00:28.529 and we have several of the students now
00:00:30.779 who say after they had went to
00:00:33.059 attendance planet smiles summer camp
00:00:35.340 that now they're interested in pursuing
00:00:38.219 their career possibly in dentistry it
00:00:40.290 also made an impact with their families
00:00:41.820 they were able to go back into their
00:00:43.200 community to teach their family members
00:00:46.170 friends about the importance of oral
00:00:48.450 health and taking care of their teeth
00:00:51.059 and and the importance they related it
00:00:54.629 to cancer and being able to know that
00:00:57.899 like smoking is there's a negative
00:01:01.800 association with smoking and will help
00:01:05.369 so it has made a significant impact to
00:01:08.369 both our community and you this year
00:01:10.020 they provided some services to the
00:01:11.340 families I believe - yeah so to make
00:01:13.740 sure that the Cure scholars had a dental
00:01:15.900 home and they were being taken care of
00:01:17.280 during my second year a dental school I
00:01:19.170 created the sealant Saturday event for
00:01:21.060 them so they come to the dental school
00:01:22.200 receive free exams and sealants for them
00:01:24.960 and their families so it's been really
00:01:26.610 great it's an ongoing program and it's
00:01:29.369 made a great impact
00:00:00.001 (instrumental music)
00:00:09.090 Planet Smilez is a nonprofitorganization that I started
00:00:12.660 before dental school. And when Icame to the University of
00:00:15.480 Maryland in 2015, I wanted toserve the community and educate
00:00:19.830 children that want to bedentists on what the field of
00:00:22.800 dentistry is mentorshipopportunities and how they can
00:00:25.710 become dentists in the future. So I think that mentorship and
00:00:29.160 early exposure to dentistry ishuge. This opportunity allows
00:00:33.300 them to see what dentistry isall about opens up mentorship
00:00:38.100 opportunities with theUniversity of Maryland School of
00:00:40.440 Dentistry, faculty, as well asalumni and current students so
00:00:45.600 they can see themselves in theirshoes.
00:00:48.629 So today, we have fiveactivities that we're having
00:00:51.509 these middle schoolers come anddo, and we're trying to get them
00:00:54.359 excited about oral hygiene andoral health care. And they're
00:00:58.529 kind of doing these hands onexperiments to see what we do as
00:01:01.439 a dentist or even right now as adental student.
00:01:03.000 We've gone to the dentist youwill like the beginning first
00:01:06.540 year kind of dentists likepeople you know, go through, it
00:01:09.570 was fun, because they wereguiding me through that I
00:01:12.240 learned a lot just from sittingin one spot and just listening
00:01:14.940 to them.
00:01:15.000 And what's really cool if youwant them not on the side of the
00:01:18.120 cheeks, not towards the tongue. What do you guys think? So they
00:01:20.790 don't mess with it because ifyour tongue feels you're gonna
00:01:22.620 keep messing with it right? Andwhat can happen, it can be
00:01:25.620 undone.
00:01:26.640 The one I'll just add we weretying like a knot around like
00:01:29.263 the teeth so to like this girlshe fell and a tooth down her
00:01:31.931 lip and you need to be trainedto do it to take it out, but you
00:01:34.730 need to go to either the basicone with no teeth in it or the
00:01:37.441 one with the tooth in it. It wasfun.
00:01:39.180 This program was great. I hope alot of dental schools and a lot
00:01:42.145 of different kinds of medicalschools, pharmacy schools are
00:01:44.883 doing programs like this becauseit can help our community and
00:01:47.757 help improve the relationshipbetween the providers or
00:01:50.266 professionals with the communityaround them.
